Building Construction is the LSLBC's commercial major classification 1 — the building, repair, raising, leveling, development or demolition of structures, with the earthwork, parking areas, driveways and sidewalks that go with them. Its trade exam is taken at PSI: 80 questions, 180 minutes, 56 correct to pass, open book with the references on PSI's outline. Louisiana licenses contractors through the State Licensing Board for Contractors. The Business and Law exam is common to every applicant and is taken in the LSLBC portal; a trade exam is added for the classifications that require one, and Building Construction does. Since August 5, 2025 the trade exams are administered by PSI Services: the board approves the application, PSI receives the eligibility, and you schedule at a PSI center. PSI's Louisiana content outline sets the format — 80 questions, 180 minutes, a passing score of 56 correct, and an open-book test in which only the listed references may be used, with a silent non-programmable calculator.
The outline spreads its 80 items across thirteen content areas — sitework, concrete, masonry, metals, carpentry, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, safety, general code, plan reading and estimating — and its reference list tells you where the answers come from: the 2018 International Building Code above all, OSHA's 29 CFR 1926 for the safety items, the Steel Joist Institute's Technical Digest 9 for open-web joists, CRSI for reinforcing steel and PTI for post-tensioning. Because the test is open book, the skill being measured is finding the right table fast and reading it correctly — presumptive bearing pressures, footing depths, riser and tread limits, egress widths — rather than memorizing them.
Two things are Louisiana's own. The damage-prevention law, La. R.S. 40:1749.11 and following, sets the One Call rules — a locate request at least 48 but not more than 120 hours before digging, marks good for up to 20 calendar days, an 18-inch tolerance zone on each side of a marked line. And the coastal parishes lie in windborne debris regions, so exterior windows and doors there must be tested and labeled to the impact standards the code references. Everything else on the exam is the model code as written; your parish's adopted edition matters for the permit, not for the test.
