Free practice questions for the Louisiana Mechanical Work trade exam — the PSI test for the LSLBC's commercial major classification 6 — with a written explanation on every answer, in English, Spanish, and Russian.
8 questions, about 5 minutes. No account needed — pick an answer to see whether it's right and read the explanation, the same explanations you get on every question in the full course.
Practice across the full question bank.
Understand why the correct answer works — not just which letter is right.
Spend more time on the questions you miss.
Practice under exam-style time pressure before exam day.
Every question tells you why the correct answer is correct and defines the terms it uses — so you learn the rule, not just the answer.
Questions are written from scratch against the official codes and agency publications for this exam — never copied from the real exam.
Every question and explanation is fully translated, with the English exam term kept alongside — not a shallow machine translation.
LICENA is a practice tool, not a school. We don't promise a pass — we help you understand the material and walk in prepared.
The full Louisiana Mechanical Work course is 500 questions across 5 blocks that keep the shares of PSI's 23 content areas, written from the open sources PSI lists for the exam — the 2018 International Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes, the 2018 IBC for fire sprinklers and 29 CFR 1926. The proprietary references on PSI's list (NFPA, ACCA, SMACNA and textbooks) are not reproduced.

Mechanical is the LSLBC's commercial major classification 6 — hydraulic and pneumatic systems: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, hydronic and steam systems, pressure vessels, plumbing, gas and process piping. Its trade exam is taken at PSI: 100 questions, 240 minutes, 70 correct to pass, open book with the references on PSI's outline. Practice it in the free sample above — no sign-up, with a written explanation on every question.
Louisiana licenses contractors through the State Licensing Board for Contractors. The Business and Law exam is common to every applicant and is taken in the LSLBC portal; a trade exam is added for the classifications that require one, and Mechanical does. A license is required when the value of the work exceeds $10,000. Since August 5, 2025 the trade exams are administered by PSI Services: the board approves the application and you schedule at a PSI center. PSI's Louisiana content outline sets the format — 100 questions, 240 minutes, a passing score of 70 correct, and an open-book test in which only the listed references may be used. The exam fee is $140.
The outline spreads its 100 items across 23 content areas. Plumbing takes a large share — water supply, fixtures, water heaters, backflow, joints, drain, waste and vent, traps and interceptors, cleanouts and developed length — and gas systems are the largest single area, with 10 questions. The rest covers piping, valves and hangers, boilers and hydronics, refrigeration, HVAC equipment, sheet metal and ducts, load calculations, fire sprinklers and safety, plus 8 questions of isometric analysis — reading a piping drawing. The codes on the reference list are the 2018 International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code, with 29 CFR 1926 for safety. Because the test is open book, the skill being measured is finding the right section or table fast — pipe slopes, cleanout intervals, test pressures, clearances — rather than memorizing them.
Louisiana has no LSLBC plumbing exam. Plumbing (classification 7) is a credential, and a mechanical contractor who performs plumbing work over $10,000 must hold a master plumber license from the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana — which is why the plumbing code sits inside this exam. If your work is limited to heating, air conditioning, ventilation, ducts and refrigeration, subclassification 6.1 has its own, narrower trade exam — 50 questions, 130 minutes, on the 2021 codes.
Tab the three codes before test day: IPC chapters 3 to 7, 9 and 10 (general regulations, fixtures, water heaters, water supply, drainage, vents, traps and interceptors), IFGC chapters 4 and 5 (gas piping, chimneys and vents), and IMC chapters 4 to 6 and 10 to 12 (ventilation, exhaust, ducts, boilers, refrigeration, hydronics) — plus OSHA's fall-protection subpart M. Then practice until you can locate the governing section in under a minute: 240 minutes for 100 questions leaves time to look things up, but not to search from scratch. The full LICENA course is 500 questions in five blocks that follow the outline, with a written explanation on every answer.
