Free practice questions for the Louisiana Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work and Refrigeration trade exam — the PSI test for the LSLBC's subclassification 6.1 — with a written explanation on every answer, in English, Spanish, and Russian.
8 questions, about 5 minutes. No account needed — pick an answer to see whether it's right and read the explanation, the same explanations you get on every question in the full course.
Practice across the full question bank.
Understand why the correct answer works — not just which letter is right.
Spend more time on the questions you miss.
Practice under exam-style time pressure before exam day.
Every question tells you why the correct answer is correct and defines the terms it uses — so you learn the rule, not just the answer.
Questions are written from scratch against the official codes and agency publications for this exam — never copied from the real exam.
Every question and explanation is fully translated, with the English exam term kept alongside — not a shallow machine translation.

The full Louisiana HVAC & Refrigeration course is 500 questions across 5 blocks that keep the shares of PSI's eight content areas, written from the open sources PSI lists for the exam — the 2021 International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code and 29 CFR 1926. The proprietary references on PSI's list (ACCA Manual J, SMACNA, textbooks and handbooks) are not reproduced.

Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work and Refrigeration is subclassification 6.1 of the LSLBC's Mechanical classification — installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, coolers, freezers and ice rinks. Its trade exam is taken at PSI: 50 questions, 130 minutes, 35 correct to pass, open book with the references on PSI's outline. Practice it in the free sample above — no sign-up, with a written explanation on every question.
Louisiana licenses contractors through the State Licensing Board for Contractors. The Business and Law exam is common to every applicant and is taken in the LSLBC portal; a trade exam is added for the classifications that require one, and subclassification 6.1 does. A license is required when the value of the work exceeds $10,000. Since August 5, 2025 the trade exams are administered by PSI Services: the board approves the application and you schedule at a PSI center. PSI's Louisiana content outline sets the format — 50 questions, 130 minutes, a passing score of 35 correct, and an open-book test in which only the listed references may be used; any duct calculator is allowed in the exam room. The exam fee is $140.
The outline spreads its 50 items across eight content areas: heating and cooling principles, theory and equipment (8), electrical knowledge, motors and controls (7), refrigerants and refrigeration (8), piping — refrigeration, hydronic, steam and process (7), fuel and LP gas (5), combustion air, chimneys, flues and vents (5), ducts, ventilation and exhaust (5), and load calculations (5). The codes on the reference list are the 2021 International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code, with 29 CFR 1926 for electrical safety on site. Because the test is open book, the skill being measured is finding the right section or table fast — clearances, refrigerant classifications, combustion-air volumes, ventilation rates — rather than memorizing them.
Subclassification 6.1 sits under Mechanical, major classification 6. The broader Mechanical Work exam — 100 questions, 240 minutes, on the 2018 codes — adds plumbing, gas piping, boilers and process piping; 6.1 is the narrower path for a contractor who does heating, cooling, ventilation, ducts and refrigeration only. Mind the edition: this exam lists the 2021 codes, so a 2018 code book tabbed for the Mechanical exam is the wrong book here.
Tab the 2021 IMC before test day — chapters 3 (general regulations), 4 (ventilation), 5 (exhaust), 6 (duct systems), 9 (specific appliances), 11 (refrigeration) and 12 (hydronic piping) — and IFGC chapters 3 to 5 (combustion air, gas piping, chimneys and vents), plus OSHA 1926 subpart K for electrical safety. Then practice until you can locate the governing section in under a minute: 130 minutes for 50 questions is about two and a half minutes each — enough to look things up, not to search from scratch. The full LICENA course is 500 questions in five blocks that follow the outline, with a written explanation on every answer.
