Why LICENA

Built to make the material make sense

An explanation on every question

Every question tells you why the correct answer is correct and defines the terms it uses — so you learn the rule, not just the answer.

Based on official sources

Questions are written from scratch against the official codes and agency publications for this exam — never copied from the real exam.

English, Spanish & Russian

Every question and explanation is fully translated, with the English exam term kept alongside — not a shallow machine translation.

Honest by design

LICENA is a practice tool, not a school. We don't promise a pass — we help you understand the material and walk in prepared.

The Contractor Management Survey is Nevada's business-and-law exam, required of every license applicant in every classification. It is open book: 60 scored questions (plus 3 unscored pretest items) in 120 minutes with a 45-of-60 — 75 percent — pass bar, and the one reference allowed in the center is PSI's Construction Business and Law Manual for Nevada. Try it in the free sample above: no sign-up, with a written explanation on every question.

The real exam at a glance

What's on the Nevada CMS exam

One survey, every classification, one manual

Whatever license you are after — General Building, B-2, electrical, plumbing, any of them — the Nevada State Contractors Board requires the CMS, and most classifications add a separate PSI trade exam on top. The CMS format, from PSI's Nevada Candidate Information Bulletin (Updated 3/25/2026): 60 scored questions plus 3 unscored pretest items, 120 minutes, and 45 of 60 — 75 percent — to pass. It is open book with a single allowed reference, PSI's Construction Business and Law Manual for Nevada; the subject matter underneath it is Nevada statute, which is exactly what LICENA's course drills — with the NRS section cited on every answer.

What the subject areas actually test

The outline weights the money side of contracting: Financial Management 12 items, Licensing 10, Estimating and Bidding 7, Contracts 6, then Tax, Labor, Environmental and Safety at 5 each, Risk Management 4, Lien Law 3 and Project Management 3. In statute terms that means NRS 624 — who needs a license, the monetary limit, discipline, and the prompt-payment sections 624.606-624.630 — NRS 108's mechanic's-lien notices, NRS 338's public-works and prevailing-wage rules, and the labor chapters: NRS 608 on wages and daily overtime, unemployment and industrial insurance beside it. The math questions are business math: markup versus margin, job costing, payment chains.

The numbers the exam loves

CMS questions concentrate on statutory numbers with conditions attached. The ones worth knowing cold: work under $1,000 including labor and materials is exempt from licensing — unless a permit is required or the work is of a licensed-trade type (NRS 624.031); retention on private jobs is capped at 5 percent of each progress payment (NRS 624.609); an unpaid prime may stop work 10 days after written notice to the owner; a notice of right to lien protects the 31 days before it is given plus everything after (NRS 108.245); prevailing wage attaches to public works estimated at $100,000 or more (NRS 338.080); and daily overtime hits past 8 hours for workers earning under 1 1/2 times minimum wage (NRS 608.018). Each number carries its conditions — the exam tests those, not just the figure.

A realistic study plan

The full LICENA course is 500 questions in five blocks that follow the outline's own areas, every answer explained with its NRS citation. At 30 questions a day that is under three weeks: one pass to find what you do not know, a second on the blocks you missed, then the timed final that mirrors the real 60-question, 120-minute, 75-percent format. Because the exam is open book, the skill is knowing where the rule lives — that retention is in 624.609, liens in 108.245, overtime in 608.018 — and drilling questions builds that map faster than reading the manual cover to cover. Schedule both exams through PSI and keep the NSCB's license-examinations page as your source of truth for logistics.
