This is the biggest slice of the Level I exam: NICET's official content outline puts installation at 44–54 percent of the questions. Expect questions on where a device may physically go and how it is terminated. A classic trap is mounting height: NFPA 72 measures the 42-to-48-inch window for a manual fire alarm box to the operable part — the handle the occupant pulls, not the top of the box — and from finished floor, so a back box roughed in before the tile goes down can end up out of compliance.
Level I also covers the pathway itself: cable type and support, separation from power conductors, and the branch circuit that feeds the fire alarm control unit. NFPA 70 — the National Electrical Code, Article 760 — is the reference here, and it is the same conductor logic you meet in our C-10 Electrical practice. The commonly missed detail: the branch circuit supplying fire alarm equipment may serve no other load, and its disconnecting means carries red identification, is marked “FIRE ALARM CIRCUIT,” and is accessible only to qualified personnel.
Safety sits inside the Level I installation domain, and NICET lists OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and 1926 plus a first aid manual as background reading — useful to study, not allowed in the test center. Ladders and lifts, fall protection, lockout/tagout and working near energized conductors are the trainee's daily reality, and the questions ask what you do before the work starts.
Maintenance is 40–50 percent of the exam, and periodic testing is its heart. Know what a functional test proves on each device type and the numbers behind system power: NFPA 72 requires a protected-premises system's secondary supply to hold 24 hours of quiescent load and then sound 5 minutes of full alarm — 15 minutes where in-building emergency voice/alarm communication is used. The 2022 edition also requires battery calculations to carry at least a 20 percent safety margin.
Troubleshooting at trainee level is mostly circuit logic. On a Class B initiating device circuit, one open in the middle puts the panel into trouble and silences everything downstream of the break; a Class A circuit routes the conductors back to the panel on a second path, so a single open still leaves every device operational. Knowing which class you are looking at tells you whether the panel's display is the whole story.
This is the smallest domain — 1 to 11 percent — and at Level I it is described simply as knowledge of technical documents. Read shop drawings, riser diagrams, device symbols and cut sheets, and be able to say what a symbol on a plan becomes in the field. Two layout numbers to have cold: a nominal 30-foot on-center spacing for spot-type smoke detectors on a smooth, flat ceiling, and a wall-mounted smoke detector whose top sits within 12 inches of the ceiling.
The Level I exam is 85 questions in 110 minutes, delivered on a computer at a Pearson VUE test center — or online with a remote proctor through OnVUE, if you pick that when scheduling. Your appointment runs 10 minutes longer than the exam to cover a tutorial. References are permitted: NFPA 72 (2022), NFPA 70 (2020) and Ugly's Electrical References (2020), bound with permanently attached tabs and no handwritten notes; NFPA 72 and NFPA 70 also appear on screen as PDFs. Calculators are built in; personal ones stay outside. Exams are offered only in English. You sign a non-disclosure agreement to begin and see pass/fail immediately. The Level I application fee is $235, published on NICET's Fire Alarm Systems program page. Fail and you can retest after 30 days, up to three attempts in any 12 months.
Passing Level I is not the same as being certified. NICET also requires a documented work history showing at least six months (full-time equivalent) of fire detection and signaling systems experience, and supervisor verification of five Level I performance measures, from job site safety awareness and identifying common fire alarm equipment to reading drawings and specifications. Certification then lasts three years and is renewed with 90 Continuing Professional Development points.
The LICENA course is 500 questions across 5 blocks, and it is free. At 30 questions a day that is roughly three weeks: one pass to find your weak blocks, a second to close them. Weight your time the way NICET weights the exam — about half installation, about half maintenance, a lighter pass on documents. Read the explanation on every question you miss, because the exam rewords facts and memorizing answer letters buys you nothing. Keep a real NFPA 72 beside you while you drill: you may carry it into the exam, so knowing where a rule lives is worth nearly as much as knowing the rule.
