What's on the C-7 Low Voltage Systems exam

The C-7 Low Voltage Systems exam is a trade exam: it asks whether you can plan, install, test and troubleshoot energy-limited systems — telephone and data, sound, cable television, closed-circuit video, satellite, instrumentation and temperature controls, and low voltage landscape lighting. CSLB's official study guide splits it into seven sections with published weights, and a C-7 practice test is only worth your time if it drills all seven. Here is what each one asks, and where candidates slip.

Job planning and design (18%)

The largest section. You read plans and specifications, plan wire routes and equipment locations, check the design against codes and industry standards, and work out how your pathways affect the other trades and the infrastructure already in the building. Scope belongs here too: the C-7 classification covers systems that are energy limited and do not exceed 91 volts, and low voltage fire alarm systems are specifically excluded from it — worth knowing before you bid one.

Material selection and estimation (15%)

Which cable, connector, mount, rack and tool the job calls for, and then what it costs. Expect arithmetic: cable quantities, device counts, labor hours and a bid price. The classic trap is markup versus margin — 20% added to your cost is not the same price as a 20% gross margin, and both numbers usually sit in the answer choices. A calculator is provided at the test center.

Wire and cable installation and termination (12%)

Laying out and supporting pathways, terminating copper and fiber, and labeling what you install so the next technician can follow it. Know your media by the numbers: a cable television drop is a 75-ohm system end to end, while balanced twisted pair is 100 ohms — swapping the two is a distractor writer's favorite.

Systems configuration and installation (16%)

Equipment room build-out first, then the systems themselves: satellite, CCTV, telephone, data, instrumentation, battery, audio/video and fiber optics, plus building automation, IP networking and VoIP configuration. Equipment rooms are where installation and safety overlap — Cal/OSHA sets the clear working space in front of electric equipment at the width of the equipment or 30 inches, whichever is greater, so a rack or backboard parked in that space is a violation even though your own gear is harmless.

Testing and project closeout (17%)

The second-largest section, and the one candidates under-study. It covers the tools and methods used to prove the equipment actually works, then the paperwork: documentation, as-built records and training the customer. Cable systems carry published federal limits you can be asked to recognize — signal leakage for analog carriers above 54 MHz and up to 216 MHz is capped at 20 microvolts per meter measured 3 meters away.

System troubleshooting, repairs, or replacements (7%)

The smallest section, and mostly disciplined logic: isolate the fault first, then decide whether to repair or replace. Telephone work has a legal dividing line built into it — the demarcation point sits within 12 inches of the protector, or of where the line enters the building, so a good dial tone at the network interface device puts the fault in the premises wiring on the customer's side.

Safety (15%)

Cal/OSHA regulations, jobsite hazard identification and safe work practices. Low voltage does not mean no rules: insulating gloves and insulated tools may be skipped only on parts energized at less than 50 volts, and only after a qualified person has determined there is no exposure to shock, burns, explosion or arcs. The same Cal/OSHA logic turns up on the CSLB Law and Business exam, asked from the employer's side, and on the C-10 Electrical exam at far higher voltages.

How exam day works

You take the C-7 exam on a computer at a PSI testing center, closed book, with 3.5 hours per exam. The official CSLB C-7 study guide sets out the format: multiple choice, four choices per question, one BEST answer, no penalty for guessing, and a calculator supplied for the computation questions. The result is pass/fail at the center; a failing report breaks your score out by section, and you may retake after 21 days, with a re-examination fee paid to PSI, inside your application's 18-month window. CSLB publishes official Spanish versions of ten exams and C-7 is not one of them — for this trade exam CSLB allows an approved translator instead.

A realistic study plan

The LICENA C-7 course is 500 questions in 5 blocks. At 30 a day that is about three weeks: one pass to find your weak sections, a second to close them, and the final days on whichever of the seven areas your results keep flagging. Weight your time the way the exam is weighted — job planning, testing and systems configuration together are just over half of it, while troubleshooting is 7%. Read the explanation on every question you miss, including the ones you guessed right; the exam rewords facts, so a memorized answer letter is worth nothing while a memorized rule carries across any wording. Pair the practice with the free official study guide, and treat any course promising a guaranteed pass as a warning sign.
