The full LICENA course is 500 questions in five blocks of 100, drawn across these layout topic areas — from the Level I plan-reading and basic-hydraulics material up through the water-supply, pipe-support and standpipe content you meet at the higher levels.
NICET's official Level I content outline puts 53–63% of the questions into a single domain: System Layout. At trainee level that means creating a simple sprinkler layout, solving basic hydraulic equations, assisting with flow tests and helping with coordination surveys. The trap here is treating the area/density method as plain multiplication. A design density of 0.10 gpm/ft² over a 1,500 ft² design area gives you 150 gpm as a starting point, but the finished calculation always lands higher, because sprinklers nearer the supply run above the minimum pressure and discharge more — and the hose stream allowance is added on top of all of it, at the connection to the water supply rather than anywhere inside the design area.
Five to fifteen percent of the exam is about pulling information out of plans and specifications and understanding what the contract actually covers. Expect scale arithmetic: at 1/8 in = 1 ft-0 in, one inch on the sheet is eight feet of building, so a branch line measuring 4-1/2 in runs 36 ft. The classic mistake is scaling an enlarged detail with the floor plan's scale — read the scale printed under each individual view, not the one in the title block.
This domain covers verifying simple building plans by field survey, collecting field data on existing fire protection systems, and identifying elements of building construction such as beam and column locations. The recurring trap is flow-test vocabulary: static pressure is read with nothing flowing, residual pressure is the reading taken while the flow hydrant is discharging. Swap those two and the whole water-supply curve is wrong, and every pipe size downstream of it goes with it.
NFPA 13 for general installation, NFPA 13R for low-rise residential occupancies, NFPA 13D for one- and two-family dwellings and manufactured homes, NFPA 291 for water flow testing and marking of hydrants — those four, in their 2022 editions, are the standards NICET names on the official Level I reference list and puts on your screen during the exam. Knowing which of the three sprinkler standards governs a given building is a question type that comes back repeatedly, and the answer usually turns on occupancy and building height rather than on square footage.
Two small domains, 1–10% each, and they are cheap points if you do not skip them. Level I tasks are assembling submittal packages, documenting correspondence with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), documenting general project correspondence, and assembling closeout documents. Read them as records-keeping questions: who has to receive what, and when.
Safety is only 1–7% of the exam, but the source is unambiguous — NICET lists OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926 among the Level I references. Sprinkler installation on a construction site follows part 1926, so the fall-protection trigger is 6 feet above the lower level, not the 4 feet you may remember from general industry.
The Level I exam is 105 questions in 150 minutes, delivered by computer at a Pearson VUE test centre; Level I candidates may also test through NICET's online proctored option. Your appointment runs 10 minutes longer than the exam to cover a tutorial. The reference standards are on screen as searchable PDFs and you may also bring your own bound copies — but no handwritten notes, no loose pages and no NFPA Handbook substitutes. This LICENA course is 500 questions in five blocks of 100. A block a week, redoing the questions you missed before moving on, gets you through the material in about five weeks with room to revisit the hydraulics block — it is the one that carries the most exam weight and the one people put off. Do the practice with the standards open, the way the real exam works: the point is not to memorise numbers but to get fast at finding them. And remember the exam is only one of three requirements — Level I also needs supervisor verification of every Performance Measure and a documented work history showing at least six months of technical experience.
