Built to make the material make sense

An explanation on every question

Every question tells you why the correct answer is correct and defines the terms it uses — so you learn the rule, not just the answer.

Based on official sources

Questions are written from scratch against the official codes and agency publications for this exam — never copied from the real exam.

English, Spanish & Russian

Every question and explanation is fully translated, with the English exam term kept alongside — not a shallow machine translation.

Honest by design

LICENA is a practice tool, not a school. We don't promise a pass — we help you understand the material and walk in prepared.

What we cover

  • Ductwork and piping — duct systems and sizing arithmetic (airflow, velocity and area), duct construction and support, and piping materials, joints and supports under the Florida Building Code, Mechanical 2023 (100 questions)
  • Load calculation, psychrometrics and insulation — heat gain and heat loss arithmetic, sensible and latent heat, psychrometric properties of air, and insulation under the Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation 2023 (100 questions)
  • Controls and boilers — thermostats, relays, pressure and safety controls, sequences of operation, and boilers, water heaters and pressure vessels under FBC-Mechanical Chapter 10 (100 questions)
  • Maintenance and service plus fuel gas — refrigeration-cycle diagnostics, superheat and subcooling, service checks, and gas piping, testing, venting and appliance rules under the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas 2023 (100 questions)

The full Florida Mechanical Journeyman course is 500 questions across 5 blocks sized to the 11 subjects of the GITS MBE1A outline — Code Compliance, Fuel Gas, Ductwork, Load Calculations, Boilers, General, Maintenance and Service, Controls, Piping, Insulation and Psychrometrics — written from open sources: the Florida Building Code, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Energy Conservation 2023 (8th edition), Florida Statutes 489.1455 and OSHA's 29 CFR 1926, with every input stated in calculation questions. The textbook on the GITS list (Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) is named by title only and is not used as a source.

Florida Mechanical Journeyman Exam Guide

Exam structure, topics, who needs it and official resources.

Florida does not issue journeyman mechanical licenses at the state level: counties and municipalities do, under Florida Statutes 489.1455, and many of them test candidates through Global Independent Testing Services (GITS). Its Mechanical Journeyman exam, MBE1A, is 75 questions in 3 hours, open book, with 75% needed to pass. The questions come from 11 subjects — from code compliance and fuel gas to controls, load calculations and psychrometrics — and the main references are the Florida Building Code, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Energy Conservation 2023. Practice it in the free sample above: no sign-up, with a written explanation on every question.

The real exam at a glance

What's on the Florida Mechanical Journeyman exam

Who needs this exam — the county journeyman license

GITS's information sheet describes the mechanical journeyman as someone who installs, repairs, maintains or alters air-conditioning, sheet-metal or process-piping systems of any size or capacity, under the supervision of an Unlimited Mechanical Contractor, Air Conditioning A, Air Conditioning B or Sheet Metal Contractor. In Florida that license comes from a county or a city, not from the state board. Florida Statutes 489.1455 lets counties and municipalities license a journeyman in the plumbing, pipe-fitting, mechanical or HVAC trades who scored at least 75% on a proctored exam approved for the trade, finished a registered, state-approved apprenticeship or logged 12,000 or more hours of training on the job in the trade, and completed the advanced module courses approved by the Florida Building Commission (or, if the certifying authority allows it, shows proof within 6 months after certification). The same section makes every county and municipality recognize a journeyman license issued by another one in Florida — so a license earned in one county is accepted across the state. The All-Counties sheet is MBE1A; Duval (MBE1Du), Pasco (MBE1Pa), Monroe (MBE1Me) and Volusia (MBE1V) issue identical versions under their own codes, and Broward gives a separate exam, MBE1B, with its own subject mix. You apply to your county or city licensing agency first; GITS schedules the exam once it has the agency's approval.

11 subjects in 75 questions

The MBE1A sheet gives the number of questions for each subject: Code Compliance 10, Fuel Gas 5, Ductwork – Systems and Sizing 7, Load Calculations 5, Boilers 5, General 5, Maintenance and Service 10, Controls 10, Piping 8, Insulation 5 and Psychrometrics (spelled "Psychometrics" on the sheet) 5. Read it as a plan. Code Compliance, Maintenance and Service and Controls carry 10 questions each — 30 of the 75 — so the biggest share is finding rules in the code and knowing how working systems are serviced and controlled. Ductwork and Piping add 15 more. The calculation subjects — duct sizing, load calculations and psychrometrics — rest on a few relations, such as airflow = velocity × area and heat flow = U × area × temperature difference, and GITS says its sizing questions carry all the information you need. If you test in Broward, the MBE1B sheet shifts the weight: Code Compliance 20, Fuel Gas 5, Ductwork Installation 7, Boilers 5, General 5, Maintenance and Service 10, Controls 7, Piping 8, Insulation 5 and Safety 3, with no separate load-calculation or psychrometrics subject — so put more of your time into code look-ups.

Open book — what you may bring, and the 2026 code

The approved references on MBE1A are the Florida Building Code, Mechanical 2023, the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas 2023, the Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation 2023, the textbook Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (19th edition, 2014) and the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Part 1926 (OSHA), 2010. GITS's FAQ allows those references and a non-programmable calculator; the only writing allowed is on the exam itself, notes are seized and books are checked for writing. GITS also says the local building departments it tests for review and approve its questions, except the estimating and sizing questions, which carry all the information you need. The Florida Building Commission has published an Analysis of Changes for the 9th edition of the code (2026), and some mechanical sections change in it — the refrigerant piping rules of §1107 and the plenum rules of §602, for example. The sheet dated 03/26 still lists the 2023 volumes, so check the reference list on the current GITS sheet before you buy books. Open book helps with look-ups, not with speed: 180 minutes for 75 questions is 2.4 minutes each, and the duct, load and psychrometric calculations take longer than that.

How exam day works

Once GITS receives your approval from the licensing agency, it calls you to set a date, or you can call it. Registration needs your driver's license and a credit card, and an admission letter arrives by mail or email; arrive 15 minutes before the start time it gives. GITS offers online testing from home or an office with a camera and microphone through contracted proctors, 7 days a week with 72 hours' notice, and onsite testing in Fort Myers, Miami, Tampa, Ocala, Boca Raton and Davie. Its fee page lists $100 for a 3-hour exam in Florida ($80 in Broward County), plus a site or proctor fee. On language: GITS's fee page says you may request the exam in Spanish when you schedule it, for an extra $25; its scheduling FAQ adds that some licensing agencies must approve a non-English exam first — ask your agency before you apply. GITS does not issue the license: the sponsoring agency does, and other localities that reciprocate require 75% or higher.

A realistic study plan

The full LICENA Florida Mechanical Journeyman course is 500 questions across five blocks sized to the GITS outline: Code Compliance & General · Ductwork & Piping · Load Calculation, Psychrometrics & Insulation · Controls & Boilers · Maintenance & Service and Fuel Gas. At 30 questions a day that is under three weeks: one pass to find the gaps, a second pass on the areas you missed, then the timed final in the real format — 75 questions in 3 hours, 75% to pass — with Spanish shown side by side with the English if you want it. Keep the Florida Building Code volumes open while you practice, because on an open-book exam the skill to build is finding the right section and table fast. The free OSHA construction practice test drills the 29 CFR 1926 jobsite rules, and the free EPA 608 practice test covers the federal certification exam for technicians who work with refrigerants. If you plan to qualify an air-conditioning contracting business later, the state CILB route has its own Florida Air Conditioning Contractor practice test; and if you also work in plumbing, the Florida Journeyman Plumber practice test covers the county plumbing exam from the same testing company.
