The B General Residential trade exam is PSI's test for Arizona's residential general contractor licenses — one exam that serves the B, B-3 and CR-61 classifications. It is open book: 100 questions in 240 minutes with a 70 percent pass bar, and the two references allowed in the center are the 2018 International Residential Code and 29 CFR 1926 (OSHA). PSI's published outline (effective 5/9/2024) states the trade test is equivalent for B General Residential Contractor, B-3 General Remodeling and Repair, and CR-61 Carpentry, Remodeling and Repairs — pass it once, plus the SRE, and you qualify for any of the three. The format: 100 questions, 240 minutes, 70 percent to pass, open book. Exactly two references are allowed in the examination center — the 2018 International Residential Code and 29 CFR Part 1926 (or PSI's printed OSHA selections) — and code questions are based on the listed 2018 edition, not the newest IRC. Tab and highlight your books before exam day; writing in them is not permitted.
The outline weights the residential build sequence: Sitework 17 items, Concrete 17, Carpentry 17, Thermal and Moisture Protection 12, Masonry 9, Finishes 9, Doors and Windows 7, Metal Framing 6, Safety 6. In IRC terms that means grading and drainage (R401.3), footings and anchor bolts (R403), wall framing with its notching and boring limits (R602.6), roof framing and attic ventilation (R806), roof coverings and underlayment (R905), emergency escape openings (R310), stucco and gypsum details, and the OSHA excavation, fall-protection and ladder rules from 1926. Notably absent: plumbing, electrical and HVAC subject areas — the licenses this exam serves must subcontract those trades.
AZ ROC's classification text requires a B licensee to subcontract work related to electrical, plumbing, air conditioning systems, boilers, swimming pools, spas and water wells to appropriately licensed contractors. The exam mirrors that boundary: where other trades appear in questions at all, it is from the general contractor's angle — sequencing the job, protecting framing a trade cut into, rough-in inspections before cover. Arizona also runs its own utility-locate law: A.R.S. § 40-360.22 requires notice to the one-call center (Arizona 811 / Blue Stake) at least two working days before excavating, and pre-1978 renovation work triggers the EPA's federal RRP lead-safe rules, which EPA administers directly in Arizona.
