The references are the 2018 International Mechanical Code — equipment installation, access, condensate, ducts, ventilation, refrigeration — and the 2018 International Fuel Gas Code for gas piping, combustion air and venting, with 29 CFR 1926 for jobsite safety. HVAC exams live on service reality: condensate drains at 3/4 inch minimum that never reduce, auxiliary pans or float switches where overflow would damage the building, attic passageways capped at 20 feet with a 30-by-30-inch service space at the appliance, working space at the control side, dryer exhaust capped at 35 feet minus fitting deductions, combustion-air openings sized in square inches per Btu/h, appliance shutoff valves in the same room within 6 feet, and vent terminations that respect people and openings. Expect applied numbers — a size, a distance, a ratio — more than theory.
R-39R covers residential air conditioning and refrigeration; commercial work requires C-39 or the dual CR-39. Refrigerant handling adds a FEDERAL layer independent of the license: EPA Section 608 certification under 40 CFR Part 82 is required for anyone who services equipment that could release refrigerant.
